The Society of Women Accountants of Nigeria (SWAN) has taken a significant step towards promoting financial literacy and education among young girls by inaugurating an accounting club at Lagos Anglican Girls Grammar School (LAGGS) and equipping the school library with accountancy and motivational books.
Mrs Hilda Ozoh, National Chairperson of SWAN, announced the inauguration of the club, named “SWAN/ICAN Future Accountants Club”, during a keynote address in Lagos. She emphasized the importance of providing students with a foundational understanding of financial information structure and enhancing their accounting literacy through practical experience and soft skills development.
Ozoh highlighted the club’s objectives, which include supporting all students, fostering a broad understanding of financial concepts, and promoting ethics and social responsibility. She also stressed the significance of effective communication and interpretation of financial information for aspiring entrepreneurs.
In addition to the club inauguration, SWAN donated professional books to the school library, emphasizing the value of knowledge, research, and continuous learning in the accounting profession. Mrs Ronke Akeredolu, Chairperson of the SWAN Equipping Schools’ Library Committee, expressed confidence that the project would positively impact the lives of the girl-child and promote a reading culture among students.
The school’s Principal, Mrs Folashade Ogedengbe, commended SWAN for choosing LAGGS as a beneficiary and pledged to ensure the students make judicious use of the donated books. She also expressed gratitude for the support and donations from SWAN leaders and members.
The initiative is expected to encourage a learning culture, raise awareness of current affairs, and prepare students for future careers in accounting with enviable integrity. The event also featured a quiz competition, with winners receiving gifts from SWAN.
Overall, the inauguration of the accounting club and the donation of books reflect SWAN’s commitment to empowering young girls through education and promoting excellence in the accounting profession.
