Police Make Arrests and Conduct Searches in South Armagh in Connection with Fraud Reports

Detectives from the Police Service’s Serious Crime Branch have made two arrests and conducted searches in the south Armagh area in connection with multiple reports of fraud.

On Tuesday, July 16, two properties in the Crossmaglen and Mullaghbawn areas were searched, leading to the arrest of two men, aged 47 and 34. The arrests were made on suspicion of offenses including theft and fraud by false representation. Both men have been released on bail pending further investigation.

During the searches, a sum of cash and mobile phones were seized and will undergo further forensic examination. Additionally, An Garda Síochána conducted a search in the Monaghan area, resulting in the seizure of plant machinery.

This operation is part of an ongoing investigation into over 50 reports of fraud on both sides of the border over a two-year period. Victims have reported selling items such as machinery, quads, and coal, only to discover that the buyer used a stolen or cloned credit card or provided a fake or cancelled bank transfer. As a result, victims did not receive payment for the goods.

Detective Sergeant Robinson emphasized the seriousness of these reports and encouraged anyone who believes they are a victim of this type of crime to come forward with information. The investigation is ongoing, and the public is urged to contact the police with any relevant details.
